Lagos Awards Prof. John Amoda

The Lagos branch conferred Professor John Moyibi Amoda with The Merit Award of the Lagos Branch of GCUOBA at its recent dinner in Lagos

PROFESSOR JOHN MOYIBI AMODA

Professor John Moyibi Amoda spent his early years growing up in Warri and in 1954, gained admission to the prestigious Government College, Ughelli from Catholic School Warri in primary five, being the first student to achieve that feat. On obtaining the West African School Certificate in 1959 and GCU not offering courses in the Humanities and Arts to the Lower Sixth form in the subsequent year, his set was transferred to Government College, lbadan, where in 1961 he achieved excellent results in the Higher School Certificate examination.

 

Professor Amoda obtained an ASPAU schoolarship to study at Dartmouth College, an Ivy League university in Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. There, he brought honour and pride on himself and his country, when in 1965 he graduated with Honors (Phi Beta Kappa; Summa Cum Laude).

 

On the completion of his graduate studies at the University of California, Berkley, he commenced his career in academia as Assistant Professor in San Francisco, College from where he moved to Rutgers University, Newark, New Jersey as Associate Professor. By 1971, Professor Amoda was headhunted by the City College of New York and appointed to the substantive rank of a full Professor. He retired from that institution in 2002 and became an Emeritus Professor of Political Science in the College in 2003.Earlier in 2002, while on sabbatical Professor Amoda served as Director-General of the Ford Foundation Assisted Centre for Development and Democratic Studies in Lagos State University.

 

Professor Amoda's collateral and ancillary works in academia speak volumes for his brilliance and dedication to service. He co-edited the Conference Proceedings on Technological Development in Nigeria, 1979. As inaugural Director-General of the International Training Institution for Peace (ITIP), he produced the 5-volume Engineering Capacity for Within Nations Conflict Resolution Statecraft, Nigeria ITIP Compendium (1993-95). Professor Amoda is widely published; space and time do not allow a listing of his numerous academic works.

In other fora, Professor Amoda has served as President, Nigerian Political Science Association (1986-88). In that capacity, he was a member of the Constitution Review Committee of the Constituent Assembly; he was also member, Government Task Force on the Presidential Library System, 1993. He served as Dean, School for Diplomacy and International Security Studies, Igbinedion University Okada, where he developed the Master Plan and Programmes of Instruction and Research on the basis of which the National University Commission approved the school in 2007. The Professor is currently working on a concept paper on Nation-building Statecraft in Africa as United Nations Security Council Article 29.

 

Professor Amoda is an Evangelist who runs a ministry, the Gospel Intercession Mission. He is married to his charming and lovely wife, Morounmubo Amoda, and they are blessed with five adorable children. Professor Amoda writes a weekly column for the Vanguard Newspapers.

 

Other than the donation of a voluminous library to GCU, he has, over the last two years provided his residence as venue for hosting all Lagos branch OBA general meetings, eloquent evidence of his abiding love and commitment to the progress and growth of his alma mater.
